Collection: Transgression Transaction

Transgression Transaction is a group exhibition at Kirks’ Grocery featuring work by Montana artists regarding the overlap of transgression and transaction in our lives. Transgression is that crossing over, just dipping one or two toes in the water over that imagined line. Being ourselves can feel like a transgression. Standing up for others can be transgression. Creating art creating can be transgression, transaction, or both.

 Transaction. Art holds incredible meaning while also being bought and sold. A sale is good news for an artist making a living on their work or simply in search of funds for more supplies. An art purchase can delight someone who brings that art into their home, their life. The transactional nature of the art market also propagates false ideas, such as “Art is only good if people buy it,” or “The only real artists are people who make a living at their art.”
