Swines Are Sweeties, Alright?, 2024, 22 x 24 inches
Screenprint
This print honors my beloved Humbug (and all piggies!). It was made as part of my ongoing advocacy efforts to reform the city livestock ordinance where I live, Missoula, MT.
Since the 1980s, smaller varieties of pigs like American Minis, Vietnamese Potbellies, and Kune Kunes have been living in U.S. homes as pets (much like dogs, but with bigger bellies and smooshier noses). A pig who naps on the couch and politely rings a bell to go outside lives a very different life than a pig on a farm. Socialized and trained as household pets, these pigs have distinct lifestyles and community impacts compared to livestock. Many cities recognize this and have created separate ordinances which offer unique regulations for pet pigs versus those raised for agriculture!
As it currently stands, the livestock ordinance in Missoula does not offer standards fit for those with pet pigs. For the past two years I have been in communication with the local animal control and city council regarding this issue, and maintain hope for reform.
Swines Are Sweeties, Alright? pushes back on the misconceptions surrounding these sweet creatures. Pigs aren’t dirty or disposable, they are tender, funny, so smart and very worthy of love.
