Marla Goodman: Out of Hand: Misremembered Memoirs & Untouched Sounds
August 3 - September 22, 2023
“Out of Hand: Misremembered Memoirs and Untouched Sounds,” a collection of paintings and mixed media work by Bozeman painter and performance artist Marla Goodman, opens August 3 at Kirks’ Grocery. Goodman’s work revolves around her 15-year obsession with the Theremin, an electronic instrument that is played without being touched. A fifth generation Montanan, grandmother and self-described community art activist, Goodman divides her creative time between “painting, practicing, and pretending.” The exhibit includes music- and Theremin-inspired paintings and collage/assemblage work drawn from Goodman’s imaginary world as Theremin-playing twin sisters. A live performance component of the show will feature Goodman’s Theremin-playing personae, Polly and Dolly Vinyl.
Opening Reception: Friday, August 4, 5:00 - 9:00 PM
Theremin Performance: Thursday, August 3, 7:00 PM
Encore Theremin Performance: Friday, September 22, 7:00 PM
